These foothills make up a narrow strip between the high Sierra Nevada on the east and the Central Valley on the west. They feature blue oak-gray pine woodlands; ponderosa pine forests appear at the transition between the foothills and the high Sierra Nevada.
Typical insect and disease problems
• Canker rots in blue oak
• True mistletoes in valley oak and other riparian hardwoods
• Western gall rust
