CFPC 2016 Insect & Disease Field Tour – Klamath National Forest, Happy Camp, June 29, 2016

Where and when to meet:

We will depart from the US Forest Service Happy Camp District Office at 8:00am. From there we will travel up the Grayback (Indian Creek) Road. Be prepared for short hikes and inclement weather. Bring your own lunch, water, sunscreen and hardhat. We will return through Happy Camp around 2:00pm, at which point we will travel east on highway 96 and go up to Lake Mountain Lookout. The tour will end at Lake Mountain Lookout at 4:30pm.

Directions:

Take I5 north from Redding to Yreka (100 miles; ~1.5 hours). Then left on US 96 to Happy Camp (70 miles: ~1.5 hours).

Topics and stops on the tour:

The tour will feature:

Progeny test site where we will discuss the White Pine Blister Rust Program from the onset in the late 50s through the present

Blackstain Root Disease Permanent Plots to discuss blackstain root disease in Douglas-fir;

Clear Creek Trailhead to look at Port-Orford cedar root disease treatments.

Insect and Disease Field Tour

Warner Mountains, Modoc National Forest

 
 
 
 

 Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2012

The tour will feature the current mountain pine beetle outbreak in lodgepole and whitebark pine with an emphasis on mountain pine beetle biology, individual tree protection and stand level management. Other topics include the effects of thinning on fir engraver beetle caused tree mortality, Heterobasidion root disease in white fir, Jeffrey pine beetle outbreak dynamics and insects and diseases of aspen. CE Credits from DPR will be applied for.

 

Where and when to meet:

We will meet in Likely, CA at 9:00 am. From there we will travel up into the south Warner Mountains of the Modoc National Forest visiting a variety of forest types such as white fir, Jeffrey pine, mixed conifer, lodgepole and whitebark pine (if accessible). Be prepared for short hikes and inclement weather. Bring your own lunch, water, sunscreen and hardhat. We will return to Likely between 4:30 and 5:00 pm.

Directions:

From the south: Take US 395 north from Susanville to Likely (85 miles; ~1.25 hours).

From the west (and north): Take CA 299 from Redding to Alturas (145 miles; ~2.75 hours). Then take US 395 south from Alturas to Likely (18 miles; ~20 minutes). Please plan to carpool as much as possible from Likely into the forest.

Lodging:

Hotels are available in Alturas (18 mi), Susanville (86 mi) and Burney, CA (109 mi). Early reservations are recommended.

2010 California Forest Pest Council 59th Annual Meeting

Meeting Overview:

Forest insect and disease issues and challenges will be presented and discussed, including topics on damaging insects and pathogens not yet found in California forests as well as climate change induced stress on pines.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to attend an evening poster session and social on 11/16.  Refreshments will be provided both meeting days, with lunch offered on the 11/17.
